IIT Guwahati has released the official exam pattern for GATE 2026. Familiarizing yourself with the structure, marking scheme, and question types is essential for formulating an effective preparation strategy.
Mode of Examination: Computer-Based Test (CBT) / Online.
Duration: 3 Hours (180 minutes).
Total Papers: 30 Subjects (Candidates can choose up to two papers from permitted combinations).
Total Questions: 65 Questions (10 General Aptitude + 55 Subject-specific).
Total Marks: 100 Marks.
GATE 2026 features three distinct question formats:
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs): Objective questions with four options; only one is correct.
Multiple Select Questions (MSQs): Objective questions where one or more options can be correct. No partial marks are awarded; all correct options must be selected to earn credit.
Numerical Answer Type (NAT): No options provided. The candidate must enter a signed real number as the answer using a virtual numeric keypad.
Questions carry either 1 mark or 2 marks. Negative marking applies only to MCQs:
1-Mark MCQ: 1/3 mark deducted for a wrong answer.
2-Mark MCQ: 2/3 mark deducted for a wrong answer.
MSQ & NAT: No negative marking for incorrect responses.
General Aptitude (GA): Mandatory for all 30 papers (15 Marks).
Engineering Mathematics: Compulsory for papers AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, NM, PE, PI, TF, and XE (typically 13–15 Marks).
Core Subject: Covers the remaining syllabus (70% to 85% weightage).
Virtual Calculator: Physical calculators are strictly prohibited. A virtual on-screen calculator will be available during the exam.
Scribble Pad: A scribble pad will be provided for rough work. It must be returned to the invigilator after the exam.
Countdown Timer: A server-synchronized timer will be displayed on the screen, showing the remaining time. The exam will auto-submit when the timer reaches zero.
